Fumetto Typeface

Italy is one of the countries where you can still find comic books in the newsstands. And in Italy comic books are called fumetto.

The Fumetto typeface is my heartfelt tribute to this tradition of comics. To make it, I was inspired by the lettering of the 1970’s Italian comics books. The Italian lettereres tried, without achieving it completely, to make all the letters look the same. That is what we want, that the fumetto creates the sensation of a meticulous handwriting.

The Fumetto is an all-uppercase font with five different weights, from light to black, plus an slanted version if you ever need it. There are also four variations for each letter to increase the sensation of handwriting. And it has almost all the diacritics needed to write in any language with Latin script. All this again at the incredible price of “Pay whatever you want from 1€”.

The computer fonts are tiny pieces of software, and the OpenType format allows adding «advanced typographical features». The Fumetto has some of these cool features.

Contextual alternates

Depending on the context in which they appear, some letters are replaced by an alternate version. The Fumetto uses this feature to increase the feeling of actual handwritting with different versions of each letter that change randomly.

Fractions

We think it’s cool to have some actual fractions in the Fumetto, so we add that feature. So, you know, you could have the true thickness.

Description

In Italy the comic is known as fumetto, and Italy still has a tradition of comic books for newsstands and continues to be one of the countries, along with Japan and France, where you can still find popular comic books of adventures, western, science fiction, etc.

The Fumetto typeface is my heartfelt homage to this tradition of comics. To make it, I based myself on the Italian lettering of the 70’s, those letters that tried to be as well cared for as possible, in which it was tried, but never quite achieved, that all the letters were equal. We want it to give the impression of a careful and restful writing.
